Everything in the life of the lovely girl, full of enthusiasm with many plans and ambitions, was upset because of an accident in February 2012.
Many years have elapsed since that day, but when recalling it, her nose still stings.
“On the way home from a dental clinic in Hoan Kiem district in Hanoi, I was hit by a tractor and fell unconscious,” she recalled.
Four days later, she woke up in pain and discovered that her right leg had been amputated, while the left leg was necrotic.
“The situation was very bad. I was extremely scared, feeling like the whole world had collapsed," she said.
“At that moment, my father's words kept ringing in my ears 'You can't die' and they inspired a 24-year-old girl like me to revive and try to overcome death,” she said.
The encouraging words "resurrected" her and brought her to life again.
But the days were really tough. She was so depressed that she didn't dare look at herself. She was concerned about her future and thought about her family and parents.
“After the terrible accident, I became afraid of deep sleep. I was afraid that when I got up every morning, I would see something on my body disappear,” she recalled.
After leaving hospital, she decided to stay in Hanoi for further treatment, rather than return to her hometown.
Explaining her decision, she said she did not want to become a burden on her relatives. She believed that the life was hers and she had to be responsible for it.
And she continued to accept the truth about what happened, and told herself that she needed to be stronger and more energetic.
She began getting used to the new circumstances. The process was thorny, and she felt tired amid whispers and comments from people around her.
After a long period of struggle, she regained hope and realized that the only person she could count on was herself.
“I decided to do something to renew myself. I have to lead my life and accept my defects,” she said.
Her life began changing in 2014 when she and her mother went to the terrace to watch the sunrise. When looking at the sunlight, she felt a glimmer of hope. Suddenly she wanted to dance, and immerse herself in that light.
She realized that dancing would help her balance herself better. She practiced standing, walking and even crawling on the ground. She practiced hard until she no longer felt the pain. Later, she forgot about the bruises and just thought she could do what she wanted.
After a lot of days of tireless training, she could dance and perform on stage.
In 2019, Be Thi Bang was happy to win the title of beauty queen at the "Beauty of the Crescent Moon" contest thanks to a dance she choreographed herself. This was the second turning point in her life after the accident.
Bang attended the contest because she wanted to escape negative thoughts, reintegrate into society, and inspire other people in difficult conditions. The victory helped her become more self-confident.
Bang is now the ambassador of Mottainai, a scholarship fund for children disadvantaged by traffic accidents and of many other inspiring programs targeting the disabled. She runs other projects aiming to easing the pain of people with disabilities.
Bang told VietNamNet that one day, she met a boy from Vinh Phuc who lost both legs in a traffic accident. The boy asked her how she could be so confident. She advised the boy to accept the defects of his body and lead a good life for his parents, his family, and for himself. After hearing the advice, the boy became more open to people.
