At the K League board of directors meeting, the K League decided to increase the overseas player quota by one to five from 2020.

The current quota for each club is one Asian player and three players from other parts of the world. The additional spot will be earmarked for players from member countries of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) who are members of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The K-League organisers said the addition aims to tap new international markets.

In February, Incheon United FC signed Vietnamese player Nguyen Cong Phuong on loan from his club Hoang Anh Gia Lai FC. Following Phuong’s arrival, the Korea Football Association said it will offer online streaming services for Incheon United FC matches within the current K League 1 season to meet the high demand from Vietnamese fans.
