Apple is expected to unveil its next iPhone generation in less than a month. While the rumored iPhone Ultra is likely to command much of the attention, the iPhone 18 Pro could appeal to a broader group of buyers thanks to a more accessible price, despite remaining a premium model.

Leaks surrounding the iPhone 18 Pro have been appearing with increasing frequency, and the latest relates directly to its exterior design. The device is expected to have dimensions and an overall form factor almost identical to the iPhone 17 Pro released in late 2025.

Intriguingly, the latest clue does not come directly from Apple, but from an accessory manufacturer.

OtterBox has put a range of iPhone 17 Pro cases on sale with packaging explicitly stating that they are also compatible with the iPhone 18 Pro - a device Apple has yet to officially announce.

If the claim proves accurate, it would suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro will retain almost the same chassis dimensions as its predecessor. The positions of buttons, cutouts, speaker grilles and other exterior elements would also be unlikely to change significantly.

It also raises another notable possibility: Apple may not be planning a major overhaul of the iPhone 18 Pro’s external camera assembly.

A calculated gamble by an accessory maker

The cases were spotted by Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who shared images on X. He said Best Buy had already begun putting the products on shelves, noting that the move appeared “a bit early.”

It is a relatively bold move.

In previous years, Apple has often made changes to the body dimensions or camera systems of new iPhone Pro models, meaning cases designed for one generation do not necessarily fit the next perfectly.

OtterBox’s decision to release cases advertised as compatible with the iPhone 18 Pro before the phone itself has been unveiled therefore suggests the company has considerable confidence in the information available to it.

If that information proves wrong, OtterBox could face customer complaints and potentially have to deal with returns. Accessory manufacturers, however, often have deep connections across smartphone supply chains, potentially giving them access to information about product dimensions and designs before devices are officially released.

Even so, the early release does not necessarily mean OtterBox is completely certain about the iPhone 18 Pro’s design. It could simply represent a carefully calculated commercial bet.

Most customers buying an iPhone 17 Pro case today will still use it with an iPhone 17 Pro. Even if the iPhone 18 Pro ultimately has a different design, OtterBox would not necessarily face a major wave of refunds.

Someone purchasing an iPhone 17 Pro and a case now has probably only recently upgraded their phone. iPhone users also tend not to replace their devices every year, often keeping them for two or three generations. The likelihood of a customer buying an iPhone 17 Pro now and immediately switching to the iPhone 18 Pro is therefore relatively low.

What OtterBox may really be seeking is an early position in the market when Apple announces the iPhone 18 Pro.

If the predicted dimensions are correct, the company would become one of the first accessory makers with products already confirmed as compatible with the new iPhone.

If the prediction is wrong and the iPhone 18 Pro’s dimensions change enough to make the cases unusable, OtterBox would need to quickly withdraw the products or revise its marketing. The company, however, appears to have calculated that the likelihood of this happening is low enough - and the potential advantage of beating competitors to market large enough - to justify the risk.

Another question is whether Apple provides accessory manufacturers with advance information about the dimensions and designs of upcoming products.

There have previously been reports suggesting that some accessory makers may work with Apple before new devices are released. But if companies do receive official information, they would presumably need to exercise extreme caution to avoid losing that privileged access.

If OtterBox were using official Apple data to market iPhone 18 Pro cases this early, it could risk having future access to similar information restricted or withdrawn. A more plausible explanation is that the company is relying on highly trusted third-party sources and is willing to take a calculated gamble ahead of the launch.

iPhone 18 Pro design remains unconfirmed

For now, consumers cannot be certain that iPhone 17 Pro cases will fit the iPhone 18 Pro until Apple officially unveils the device.

Still, the fact that a major accessory brand such as OtterBox is willing to print iPhone 18 Pro compatibility on its packaging is a noteworthy signal.

If accurate, it could point to an interesting approach for the next iPhone generation: Apple may make significant upgrades to the hardware inside while leaving the exterior dimensions and overall design largely unchanged.

With the expected iPhone 18 Pro launch approaching, more information about its dimensions, cameras, design and accessory compatibility is likely to emerge.

Until Apple makes the device official, the details remain rumors. But OtterBox’s move adds weight to speculation that the iPhone 18 Pro could retain the dimensions of its predecessor.
