Since June 2016, over 70 mother turtles have crawled on sandy beaches and laid 1,400 eggs. These include green sea turtles, hawksbill sea turtles and loggerhead sea turtles, which have been listed as highly endangered species.

Besides Con Dao National Park in the province of Ba Ria–Vung Tau, the Bai Thit and Bai Ngang areas of Nui Chua National Park are the only places on the mainland the turtles choose to lay eggs.

According to Pham Anh Dung, deputy head of the conservation division of Nui Chua National Park, the sea turtles always come to lay eggs in the months from June to October, after they cross the ocean.

During the 2008-2015 period, the members of the Bai Thit rescue station have protected nearly 6,000 sea turtles and returned them to the sea.

For many years, the marine reptile has been hunted by humans, who take its meat for food and its shell for making handicrafts. Bai Thit Turtle Station has been established with the aim of preventing people from killing turtles and protecting the precious animals.
