Social organizations have recently talked much about a new phenomenon: Vietnamese students leaving Vietnam for study abroad at younger ages. Previously, students left Vietnam only after they finished high school. But now many students leave after they finish secondary education.


Students begin preparing for their overseas study when they are at primary school. Those who cannot get scholarships are willing to fund their study themselves.

A local newspaper reported that most of the winners at Road to Olympia who obtained scholarships to study in Australia have not returned to Vietnam.

Nguyen Hai Dang, 25, a mechatronics engineer in Japan, admitted that he and some friends of his are not sure when they will return to Vietnam.

“The working environment and living conditions here are very favorable for me and they are much better than in Vietnam,” he explained.

Tran Trung from Hanoi also said he finds life very good in Singapore with good salary and public services, and that he "cannot imagine what his life will be like" if he comes back to Vietnam.

Bui Ngoc Phuc, a branding expert, who has a son studying in Japan, noted that the percentage of Vietnamese students returning to Vietnam is on the decrease because of the bad remuneration and unreasonable working environment.

A newly recruited civil servant can receive no more than VND5 million a month, while the rate for businesses is just VND12-15 million.

A local newspaper reported that a group of Vietnamese workers sent to the US to attend a training course at a prestigious university, after returning to Vietnam, were assigned to do manual work. One of the members of the group now has to work as a taxi motorbike driver to earn extra money.
