According to the Hanoi Education and Training Department, the city will continue applying the online enrollment method for preschool, primary and secondary schools in the 2017-2018 academic year. The enrollment will begin on June 15.

However, the race for seats at the schools began one month ago and parents are now sprinting to finish. Analysts said that the race is so hot that the competition ratio at preschools is even higher than competition at universities.

A parent in Trung Hoa, Nhan Chinh residential quarter in Hanoi said her daughter applied for the Ngoi Sao Primary School. The school organized the first enrollment campaign in April and her daughter failed.

“I heard that 2,000 students have applied for the school, while only 200 students will be admitted. Therefore, it is very difficult to obtain seats at the school this year,” she said.

Nguyen Sieu Primary School, one of the ‘star’ schools in Hanoi, announced it would only enroll 240 students this year and there must be no more than 26 students in each class.

Students won’t have to attend the school entrance exam, but will have to attend an exchange program. Children’s abilities will be discovered at the event which will allow the school to choose the best students.

“With this testing method, parents won’t know why their children fail and why they pass,” Hong Hanh, a parent in My Dinh residential quarter, said.

Ly Thai To Primary School plans to enroll six classes this year, including three English subject major classes and three high-quality classes.

Students will be asked to attend a preparatory class and if they receive positive comments from teachers, they will be admitted to the school without having to sit tests.

Meanwhile, Brandon School has completed the enrollment for the 2017-2018 academic year and the list of students admitted has been made public.

Some parents have confirmed that the lists of students admitted to some schools have been fixed.

Hoang Huong, a parent in Cau Giay district, said her daughter has been admitted to Pascal Primary School.

“She had to attend an interview in English and take an EQ test,” she said, adding that the school informed her about the result of the entrance tests some months ago.

However, Huong said her daughter would still apply for other schools which organize entrance exams in June.

An analyst has said that the competition for primary schools has become even more stifg than the one for university.

Vietnamese parents, especially urbanites, accept to spend big money to send their children to star schools to prepare their children well for the education path.
