On the afternoon of September 19, Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that the Future Summit will focus on the theme "Multilateral Solutions for a Better Future."
Concurrently, the high-level plenary session of the UN General Assembly will revolve around "Leaving No One Behind: Together for the Progress of Peace, Sustainable Development, and Human Dignity for Present and Future Generations." These discussions aim to unify global strategies to address future challenges and urgent issues.
This diplomatic mission marks General Secretary, President To Lam’s first multilateral foreign engagement in his new capacity, highlighting his role at the most significant and influential global forums.
The visit to the United States coincides with the one-year anniversary of the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the US, as well as the upcoming 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
Over the past year, numerous high-level exchanges between Vietnamese and American delegations have taken place, enhancing cooperation through newly established dialogue mechanisms.
Vietnam and the US have achieved significant progress in areas such as security, defense, high-tech education and training, including semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
Vietnam is currently the 8th largest trading partner and the 6th largest goods import market for the US in Asia. Both nations continue to collaborate effectively within multilateral frameworks and forums, addressing common global challenges.
Following the US visit, Mr. To Lam will undertake his first state visit to Cuba as the head of both the Party and the State of Vietnam. This visit underscores the enduring solidarity and special friendship between Vietnam and Cuba, which has been a treasured asset for both nations.
Vietnam and Cuba have maintained close ties for over six decades, with cooperative efforts spanning various sectors, including rice supply, food production development, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.
Vietnam is currently Cuba’s second-largest Asian trading partner and the largest Asian investor in the region. Both countries actively support each other in international forums, particularly at the United Nations.
During the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, President To Lam will deliver important speeches at both the Future Summit and the 79th UN General Assembly.
He will also participate in bilateral meetings with US government leaders, members of Congress, and heads of various ministries and departments.
In Cuba, Party Chief and President To Lam will engage in discussions with First Secretary and President Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez, President of the Cuban National Assembly Esteban Lazo Hernandez, and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, among others.
Hang emphasized that this mission takes place in the context of nearly 50 years of evolving relations between Vietnam and the United Nations, marked by active and substantial contributions to global peacekeeping, security, and sustainable development initiatives. Vietnam has successfully held several key positions within the UN, contributing significantly to both regional and global cooperative processes.
