Patrik Le Giang’s road to becoming Vietnam’s first-choice goalkeeper has been anything but straightforward. At the 2026 ASEAN Cup, years of setbacks and persistence have culminated in a remarkable run between the posts.

A 10-out-of-10 performance

Hai Long and Quang Hai scored Vietnam’s goals at Rajamangala Stadium, but coach Kim Sang Sik’s side might not have secured victory had Patrik Le Giang not produced an outstanding performance.

Thailand piled enormous pressure on Vietnam’s goal throughout the first half, but the hosts repeatedly found Le Giang standing in their way.

In the 36th minute, the goalkeeper reacted sharply and made a diving save to deny a dangerous effort from Yotsakorn Burapha. Just minutes later, Yotsakorn broke through again, only for Le Giang to race off his line and narrow the angle, preventing the Thai forward from converting the opportunity.

Even after Vietnam established a two-goal lead, Le Giang’s importance remained clear. Deep into stoppage time, he produced another spectacular diving save to keep out an effort from Waris Choolthong and preserve the clean sheet.

The 34-year-old’s near-flawless display earned him the Player of the Match award.

Kim said Vietnam could have conceded three goals without Le Giang’s heroics. The South Korean coach even suggested that, in his current form, the goalkeeper could make life difficult for global superstars such as Messi and Ronaldo.

Le Giang responded to the praise with characteristic modesty.

“I am incredibly grateful. I deeply appreciate the opportunity I have been given to play for Vietnam,” he said. “I am simply doing my job as well as I can and always trying to give everything I have, to represent the country and repay everyone’s faith in me.”

The long road to becoming No. 1

There is still one match left in the 2026 ASEAN Cup final, and Le Giang’s form could prove crucial as Vietnam seek to overcome Thailand on aggregate and successfully defend their title.

Should Vietnam lift the trophy, it would hardly be surprising to see Le Giang named the tournament’s best goalkeeper - or even its best player.

Through seven matches so far, he has conceded just once, in Vietnam’s 3-1 group-stage victory over Cambodia. No other goalkeeper at the tournament has matched that record.

For Vietnam, Le Giang’s performances have even surpassed those of Dinh Trieu during the previous ASEAN Cup campaign.

His emergence has also solved what had been a source of concern for Kim. Nguyen Filip and Dang Van Lam had struggled for consistency, while Trung Kien remained young and short of experience.

Yet Le Giang’s journey to the top was far from smooth.

Fourteen years ago, the overseas Vietnamese goalkeeper came to the V-League for a trial with Saigon Xuan Thanh but failed to secure a place.

He returned to the V-League in 2023 to join CAHN. After only half a season, however, competition with Nguyen Filip left him searching for regular playing time, and he moved to Ho Chi Minh City FC on loan.

Le Giang, who was born in Slovakia, gradually established himself as a dependable presence in goal after overcoming a series of challenges.

Last season, he helped CA TP.HCM win the National Cup. He subsequently obtained Vietnamese citizenship, finally opening the door to his first appearance for the national team.

Le Giang speaks Vietnamese well, and one sentence has repeatedly surfaced in his interviews.

“I am truly grateful that, after three and a half years, my dream has come true.”

That sense of gratitude appears to fuel the way Le Giang plays - with commitment, intensity and heart.

At the 2026 ASEAN Cup, he has established himself as Vietnam’s No. 1 goalkeeper. And if his remarkable rise continues, that position could remain his for much bigger challenges ahead.
