This half-real-half-fictional “museum of the mind” show presents the artist’s archives of the memories of his late grandmother.

Found objects or artifacts (collective memories) are metamorphosed into personal memories to reflect the identities of two individuals whose beliefs are influenced by differing geographical and historical contexts in which the mind and compassion of humankind are the shared heirloom being inherited and continued.

The repetition of images and human behaviors are intentionally observed, documented, and reconstructed, not only to replicate history, but also to pose questions or, in a way, re-identify the given objects and phenomena.

“museum of the mind” takes place in a residential space that has lost its function – a space in which the artist and his companions have reconditioned in an attempt to challenge the definition of a museum per se.

With regard to the artist’s current practice, the act of reinventing existing artifacts and structures is also considered a process, in which new media for his personal archives are formed – an archival practice that suggests various questions on identities and functions of objective matters, as well as contemplation on societal faith in such apparent objectivity.

Phan Anh is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Vietnam. By working with multiple media, he experiments possible outcomes when the four elements – research, material, space and artistic experience – interact.

He has participated in several experimental projects such as IMPAKT Festival in the Netherlands and Venice Biennale 2015’s Research Pavilion in Italy. He is currently co-curating “Duong Chay” project with Vicky Do.

“museum of the mind” is curated by Tuong Linh Do and Phan Anh.
