VietNamNet Bridge – Diving to the seabed off four provinces in central Vietnam to collect samples, scientists noticeddestroyed coral reefs and an absence of many marine species due to toxins like phenol and cyanide.

The investigation was conducted to find the cause of the mass fish deaths in the area from the discharge of waste water of the Formosa steel plant.

In Ha Tinh, scientists surveyed the area around Ron Ma Cape and Son Duong island, about 7.5 km from Formosa’s waste pipe.

The seabed around Ron Ma Cape had many large boulders and organisms. Coral fish were sparse, particularly the species of favia, turbinaria, favites, goniastrea, and montipora. There were several coral fish species of Holocentridae, Chaetodontidae ... at a density of less than 30 fish per 250 m2 area of the reef.

In the seabed around Hon Duong Island, about 35-40% of coral fish were dead, particularly the species of Acropora and Montipora.

There were only several small coral fish.

Diving to the seabed of Hon La island in Quang Binh province, scientists saw the coastal coral fish distributed to a depth of 4 m, the common Acropora coral species, but around 45% of them were dead.

In the seabed of Hon Nom Island, in Vung Chua, Quang Binh, the coverage of coral reef was only 10 percent. The dead species of coral were Montipora, Favia, Favites, and Goniastrea.

They also realized the absence of common coral fish in the area.

Cá thia trên nền đáy

In the seabed of Cua Tung in Quang Tri province, the situation was similar. Scientists did not see lobster larvae in small caves, though this was the best time to harvest baby lobsters.

They also saw bones of dead fish and oysters on the seabed, particularly around Con Co Island.

On the seabed of Son Cha Island in Thua Thien-Hue province, scientists detected vast areas of dead coral and did not see many fish.

Around the coral reefs of Bai Chuoi and northern Hai Van, the situation was the same.

Experts worried about biodiversity decline and habitat destruction in these areas.

Scientist said that to restore coral reefs, it may take decades to hundreds of years, depending on the degree of pollution.
