VietNamNet Bridge – Some markets in Co Nhue ward in Bac Tu Liem district of Hanoi are supplied with water spinach that has been planted in a cemetery, where the vegetables are surrounded by belongings of the dead.
The cemetery, located on Lane 145, Co Nhue road, Bac Tu Liem district, has long been a vast water spinach field, where vegetables are planted around tombs.
Every day, growers fertilize vegetables to harvest them quickly.
They also burn and chop down plants around tombs to expand the vegetable field.
Water spinach is also grown on top of new graves.
Belongings of the dead such as sedge mats or blankets are thrown around the vegetable field.
Vegetables are watered by the small canal running along the cemetery. The water is always black.
In the early morning, growers come to the cemetery to pick vegetables and then take them to local markets.
When asked if they dare eat this kind of vegetable, a woman insisted: “I am not afraid. I still eat my vegetables all the time.”
Water spinach is bundled to sell at markets in Co Nhue Ward.
Vegetables are sold at a market, which is about 1 km from the vegetable fields.
Customers do not know the origin of the vegetables. A bundle of water spinach is priced only VND2,000-VND3,000 ($0.1). |
