Vietnam’s Civil Aviation Authority has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Transport for the expansion of Phu Quoc international airport, aiming to accommodate 10 million passengers annually by 2030 and 18 million by 2050.
Under the 2021-2030 master plan, the airport will be classified as a 4E international airport and a Level II military airport, capable of handling 25,000 tons of cargo per year by 2030.
The expansion plan includes 30 aircraft parking positions capable of accommodating large aircraft such as the Boeing 747, Boeing 787, and Airbus A350.
For passenger terminals, the current T1 terminal, with a capacity of 4 million passengers per year, will remain operational for both domestic and international flights. A new T2 terminal, located east of T1, will be constructed to serve an additional 6 million passengers annually.
In addition, the plan outlines the development of a VIP lounge near the air traffic control tower to accommodate leaders attending the APEC 2027 summit in Phu Quoc. After the event, the VIP facility will be converted for use in international or general aviation operations.
By 2050, the master plan envisions the airport expanding further to handle 18 million passengers and 50,000 tons of cargo per year. The number of aircraft parking positions will increase to 45.
During this phase, the existing T1 terminal will continue to serve 4 million domestic passengers per year. The T2 terminal will be expanded to accommodate 8 million domestic passengers annually, while a new T3 terminal will be built west of T1, with a capacity of 6 million international passengers per year.
