Phu Quoc will soon have an electric train line spanning approximately 17.7 kilometers, with five to seven stations and a design speed of 70-100 km/h.

This urban rail segment is a key component of Phu Quoc’s modern public transportation strategy.

On October 24, the People’s Council of An Giang Province approved the investment plan for the first phase of Phu Quoc’s urban electric train project.

The project will be implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, with a total estimated investment of nearly 9 trillion VND (approximately USD 366 million).

According to the proposal by the provincial People’s Committee, the project is intended to create a modern, eco-friendly public transport system that meets local and tourist travel demands while preparing infrastructure for the APEC 2027 High-Level Week.

The planned rail line includes five to seven stations and a vehicle maintenance center.

Each train will consist of three to five carriages and operate at a speed of 70 to 100 km/h.

The project is scheduled to break ground in Q4 this year and is expected to be completed by Q2/2027.

The maximum contract duration is 40 years from the date of operation.

The project will be executed under a build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract, a type of PPP.

The state budget will contribute a maximum of 70% of the total investment - over 6.2 trillion VND (around USD 252 million), of which 70% will come from the central government and the rest from the provincial budget.

The private investor will be selected through a "special case" mechanism in accordance with legal regulations.

Once completed, the first phase of Phu Quoc’s urban electric train line will connect major transportation routes from Phu Quoc International Airport to APEC Avenue and the APEC conference center.

The project is expected to reduce reliance on personal vehicles, minimize traffic accidents, and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition to serving APEC 2027, the rail line is also expected to serve as a launchpad for the development of smart and green urban areas on the “Pearl Island.”

It will provide a boost to local tourism, the service sector, and employment opportunities for the local population.
