The event drew the participation of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Head of the Party Central Committee's Economic Commission Nguyen Van Binh, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam and nearly 1,500 business representatives.

Addressing the event, PM Phuc pointed out that the rate of trained workforce still remains low at 22%, or one thirds compared to that of Republic of Korea and Singapore though Viet Nam’s workforce ranks 3rd in ASEAN.

The structure of trained workforce is irrational in addition to the lack of both teachers and workers, the Government chief frankly said.

Viet Nam’s population and economy size respectively rank in top 15 and top 40 globally but the country has not been listed among the world’s top 50 in vocational training, he added.

Phuc said that vocational training must stick to the real market demands to harmonize the demand and supply of skilled laborers.  

He underlined the the importance of developing vocational training in line with the international standards to meet high demands from domestic and foreign enterprises.

It is necessary to enhance the capacity of forecasting the demand for highly skilled workforce in order to shape partnership orientations between businesses and vocational training establishments, said Phuc.

Phuc tasked the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs to put forward a tri-party mechanism for cooperation between business, vocational schools and the Government to accelerate vocational training in key industry sectors.

Accordingly, such mechanism needs to facilitate enterprises’ involvement in designing curriculum, training process, and reception of interns.

Vocational schools must concentrate on improving professional skills, getting access to new skills from domestic and foreign firms and enhancing the quality of teaching, equipments and practices.

Meanwhile, localities should give priority to projects which are jointly launched by the vocational training centers and enterprises to strengthen the connectivity between schools and enterprises.
