PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Wednesday called on the US to support Viet Nam to win a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure at his meeting with Vice President Mike Pence on sidelines of the 33rd ASEAN Summit in Singapore.

The Vietnamese Government chief affirmed the US is one of Viet Nam’s top partners, expressing his wish to further heighten the bilateral ties on the basis of respect for each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political systems.

PM Phuc especially highly valued the US leaders’ commitments to collaborate with Viet Nam to address the war consequences in Viet Nam, including efforts for dioxin decontamination of the Bien Hoa airport.

He asked the two sides to continue facilitating trade and investment ties for mutual benefits.

Viet Nam is keen on reform international integration process, striving to improve its business and investment climate and the capacity to protect intellectual property rights, complying with international financial and monetary standards, said PM Phuc.

He also spoke highly of the two countries’ coordination in regional and international issues, welcoming the US’s support for ASEAN centrality and for the bloc-led mechanisms as well as for ASEAN’s position on the East Sea issue.

Vice President Mike Pence said the US supports Viet Nam to be a strong, independent and prosperous nation, pledging to work with Viet Nam on issues of shared intersts.

He expressed thanks to the Government and people of Viet Nam for effective support in search and return of the American soldiers mission in action in Viet Nam.

Vice President Mike Pence said the US shares interests in maintaining peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation and observation of international law in the Indo-Pacific region.

He asked the Vietnamese side and other countries to continue backing the dialogue process between the US and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea./.
