The National Election Council yesterday held a press conference to announce results of the 14th National Assembly election in which leaders of Communist Party, Government and National Assembly garnered the highest number of votes.

The conference was chaired by NA deputy chairman Phung Quoc Hien, NA secretary general Nguyen Hanh Phuc, Minister of Information and Communications Truong Minh Tuan and Head of NA Committee for Deputy Affairs Tran Van Tuy.

Presenting the council’s resolution on election results of the 14th NA and all level people’s council in the term of 2016-2021, Mr. Tuy reported the high voter turnout of 99.35 percent showing citizens’ political and responsible awareness.

In Hanoi, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong garnered 86.47 percent of valid votes. Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Hoang Trung Hai gathered 87.16 percent of valid polls.

In HCMC, President Tran Dai Quang reaped 75.08 percent of valid votes. Secretary of the city Party Committee Dinh La Thang attained 85.2 percent.

In Hai Phong, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc harvested 99.48 percent of votes, garnering the highest number of polls.

In Can Tho city, NA Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan got 91.46 percent. Standing Secretary of Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam Dinh The Huynh achieved 85.71 percent.

Answering reporters’ query about the situation in which a number of voters asked others to cast ballots for them, NA deputy chairman Phung Quoc Hien said that the National Election Council did receive some letters about that.

After checking the information, the council found it occurred at some households with members working away from their hometowns. However the violation was not serious and did not affect election results hence local election councils have talked to violators and rectified the situation.

Only to Kien Giang province, the council found the violation serious so it canceled voting results and required the province to reorganize the election on June 5.

About the matter that up to 100 members of the Central Committee of Communist Party of Vietnam won the election, Mr. Hien said that they are all representatives of the Party and State important organs.

Voters trusted and voted them NA members, which would consolidate the Party’s leadership to the NA.

To the rate of reelected deputies which reached 30 percent, Mr. Hien said the rate was normal and equivalent to previous terms and ensured the quality, reform and legacy in the parliament’s operation.

In conclusion of the conference, the National Election Council said that election results met defined targets and plans and deputy structures were basically suitable with expectations.

The numbers of deputies who are ethnic minority groups, young and postgraduate were higher than the 13th NA.

It is expected to be a basis to contribute in developing the highest organ of state power, representative for the willing and aspiration of the entire Vietnamese nation and having full operational capability with better quality and efficiency, Mr. Hien said.

Right after the press conference, NA secretary general Nguyen Hanh Phuc answered media more matters related to NA election.

Talking about non-party members falling by half over the previous tenure, he said that the list of 97 non-party nominees had been carefully chosen through three negotiation rounds. He supposed that the nominees in the list are all qualified however their success in the election depends on voters.

Those causing violations in Kien Giang will be handled in accordance with the Penal Code by law enforcement agencies.

The official list of NA member was also announced on June 9. Within the five following days, the National Election Council will receive all complaints about the winners and reply within 30 days.

After the process, the council will issue a resolution to recognize the status of NA deputies, which is a difference compared to the previous tenure.
