The Ministry of Public Security’s Traffic Police Department, in cooperation with the National Traffic Safety Committee, has launched three campaigns to punish traffic violators, targeting drunk drivers nationwide.
Traffic police carry out random breath tests to detect drunk driving.
Speaking at a conference on April 16, Tran Son Ha, director of the department, said the traffic police would organise the first campaign on drunk driving between April 16 and May 15, the second between August 16 and September 15, and the third between December 16 and February 15, 2019.
The police will focus on cracking down on violators from 12.30am-2pm and 6pm-9pm in large cities and from 10am-1pm and 5pm-7pm on inter-communal roads, mainly targeting passenger buses, cargo trucks and motorbikes with drivers aged 15-25.
Vice chairman of the National Traffic Safety Committee Khuat Viet Hung said the campaigns were aimed at increasing public awareness of regulations on permitted alcohol levels on the road.
Hùng said the police would tighten control on actions against police patrols and inspections.
Last year, more than four million violations were found. Of this, 350,000 violators had their driving licences revoked, and more than 632,000 vehicles were seized.
Among 50,000 violators, 4,000 were car drivers and the rest were motorbike drivers. — VNS
