On June 9, police in Ninh Binh Province announced an administrative fine of VND7.5 million (USD289) against L.Q.A., a resident of Hanoi, for providing and sharing false and fabricated information that caused public concern and confusion.

Authorities said the case stemmed from 37 social media posts that circulated widely online, recounting alleged supernatural and paranormal experiences during a boat trip in Trang An.

The posts, published through a Threads account under the name “Netolatone,” described a series of mysterious incidents that were portrayed as spiritual and unexplained phenomena.

The stories quickly attracted significant public attention, generating more than 52,000 likes along with tens of thousands of comments, shares and other interactions. Police said the posts sparked controversy, affected public order and negatively impacted the tourism image of Ninh Binh Province.

Following an investigation, authorities summoned the woman for questioning.

During the working session, she admitted to posting all 37 stories and acknowledged that many of the details were unsupported, lacked witnesses and had been added or embellished to make the stories more engaging.

Police also determined that several key claims were entirely false.

Investigators found no evidence that the vehicle transporting her during the trip had broken down or that a driver had forced her to leave the vehicle, as described in some of the posts.

Authorities further confirmed that details involving phone calls to a former boyfriend and his mother - which were presented as part of the paranormal narrative - had been fabricated.

After working with police, the woman removed the posts and signed a commitment not to repeat the violations.

The case comes amid broader efforts by authorities to combat the spread of false information and sensational content on social media platforms, particularly material that may cause public misunderstanding or damage local tourism and community interests.
