Thousands of households in Thanh Hoa Province's Muong Lat District are facing food and clean water shortages following a recent flood.

Students and local people living far from Muong Lat have to wait for boats to go home and visit relatives as many areas of the district have been damaged by the flood and landslides.

Highway 15C that connects Muong Lat with other districts has been completely blocked.

The authorities are also facing difficulties in collecting and transferring food and other necessities to flood victims.

Rice is being donated in Trung Ly Commune and via Trung Ly border station. The border guards will carry the rice by motorbike before switching to boats.

Luong Minh Thong, party secretary of Muong Lat said, "Even the roads from the district's centre to other communes have also been destroyed in the flood. We can only walk to the isolated villages."

On September 5, three tonnes of rice was transferred to Tam Chung Commune. They still lack food and fresh water for thousands of people in Muong Chanh, Tam Chung and Muong Ly communes. Fuel is also running out.

According to the locals, this is the worst flood for 20 years, causing hundreds of billions of VND in damage.

Statistics from Muong Lat People's Committee show that seven people were killed or went missing and over 200 houses and dozens of school sites were damaged or destroyed.
