
The prestigious distinction recognizes his scientific, educational and cultural contributions.
In an official letter, Olivier Brochet, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Vietnam, informed Professor Hoang Anh Tuan of his appointment as Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques under a decree of the Prime Minister of the French Republic.
According to the announcement, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan received the honor for his dedication and dynamism in implementing the Vietnamica Program and the project “Heritage Tourism Journeys in the City of Hanoi.” These initiatives have significantly strengthened cooperation in social sciences and humanities between France and Vietnam.
The two projects were carried out during the 2020-2025 period under the academic leadership of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, in collaboration with the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie and the French Embassy in Vietnam.
The French Embassy in Vietnam is expected to organize a formal ceremony to confer the Ordre des Palmes Academiques on Professor Hoang Anh Tuan in the near future.
Born in 1976 in Thanh Hoa province, Professor Hoang Anh Tuan earned his bachelor’s degree in 1999 and his master’s degree in 2001 in Archaeology from Vietnam National University, Hanoi. He pursued further postgraduate studies in the Netherlands, obtaining a master’s degree in 2002 and a PhD in History in 2006 from Leiden University.
He has worked at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, VNU Hanoi, serving in various roles including lecturer (2007), vice dean (2010), vice rector (2016) and rector (2021).
He was appointed Associate Professor of History in 2012 and Professor of History in 2019. He has also participated in several international academic and educational organizations, including SEASREP Foundation (2012-2018, member of the selection committee and board of trustees), the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2012-2013, fellow; 2017-2023, scientific ambassador), and SEAMEO-SPAFA (member since 2017).
The Ordre des Palmes Academiques is one of the most distinguished honors of the French Republic. Established by Emperor Napoleon I in 1808, it recognizes outstanding contributions by French and foreign scholars, educators and cultural figures.
