Both leaders share a strong academic foundation in economics. Nguyen Thi Thanh holds a doctorate in Economics and a master’s degree in Business Administration, while Nguyen Thi Hong holds a master’s degree in Development Economics.

They are both members of the Party Central Committee and have served as National Assembly deputies across multiple terms.

While Nguyen Thi Thanh has accumulated extensive leadership and management experience at both local and central levels, Nguyen Thi Hong is widely recognized for her deep expertise in finance and monetary policy at the State Bank of Vietnam.

Rising through grassroots and leadership roles

Nguyen Thi Thanh was born in 1967 in Ninh Binh. She holds a doctorate in economics and a master’s degree in Business Administration. She has been an alternate member of the Party Central Committee for the 11th term and a full member for the 12th, 13th, and 14th terms, as well as a deputy of the 13th, 14th, 15th, and 16th National Assemblies.

Her career began in youth union work, where she held various roles such as Chief of Office of the Ninh Binh Youth Union, Secretary of the provincial Youth Union, Chair of the provincial Young Pioneer Council, and Chair of the provincial Youth Federation. She later served as Head of the Provincial Party Committee’s Mass Mobilization Commission and Chair of the Ninh Binh Confederation of Labor.

In early 2012, she served as Secretary of Yen Khanh District Party Committee for over a year before becoming Secretary of the Ninh Binh Provincial Party Committee.

In April 2020, she was assigned to the National Assembly Standing Committee’s Committee for Deputy Affairs, where she served as Standing Vice Chair before becoming Chair, concurrently holding the position of Deputy Head of the Party Central Organization Commission.

In mid-2024, she was elected Vice Chair of the 15th National Assembly.

Extensive experience in finance and monetary policy

Nguyen Thi Hong was born in 1968 in Hanoi and holds a master’s degree in Development Economics. She is a member of the Party Central Committee for the 13th and 14th terms and a deputy of the 16th National Assembly.

She has held numerous positions at the State Bank of Vietnam, dedicating decades to monetary policy work before becoming deputy director and then director at various departments.

After six years as Deputy Governor, she was recognized for her strong expertise and key advisory role in major monetary policies. On November 12, 2020, the 14th National Assembly approved her appointment as Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam.

Nguyen Thi Hong became the first female governor since the establishment of the central bank.

From January 2025 to April 2026, she served as a member of the Party Central Committee, a member of the Government Party Committee, Secretary of the Party Committee, and Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam.
