Doctor Trần Văn Sơn, deputy head of the Emergency Department at the city’s Việt Nam-Cuba Hospital, was punched in the face by Lê Minh Hải, a patient’s relative, while trying to stop a brawl that occurred at the hospital on Monday night.

The assault caused corneal laceration, eyeball injury and bleeding in Sơn’s eye.

Lê Minh Hải, 22, from Central Highlands’ Gia Lai Province, has been charged with causing a public order offense. He has been temporarily placed under arrest for three months.

The police are also investigating two other defendants – Phan Hoàng Diệu, 26, and Nguyễn Trung Thông, 33 – who teamed up with Hải against the doctor during the assault.

The police said they will launch an official investigation into the gang on the two charges of “causing a public order offense” and “deliberately inflicting injuries” once they have enough evidence.

On Monday night, Lê Trần Minh Tâm and Y Giang Long from Gia Lai Province, victims of a traffic accident, were taken to the Việt Nam-Cuba Hospital in Đồng Hới City for treatment.

A while later, Tâm was called out to the hallway by Long’s relatives (Hải, Diệu, Thông) where he was punched three times in the right eye by Hải, which damaged his eye socket. Doctor Sơn got beaten while trying to stop Hải from hitting Tâm.

Medical employee assaulted

The police of Hương Khê District in the central province of Hà Tĩnh on Wednesday commenced criminal proceedings against resident Hoàng Xuân Hải, 26, who stabbed a medical employee at the medical centre of Hương Long Commune last Friday, for “deliberately inflicting injuries.”

Trần Thị Thanh Hải, deputy head of the centre, was stabbed several times in the right arm with a knife by Xuân Hải during her shift. She previously refused Xuân Hải sterile water infusion because he was drunk, the Tuổi Trẻ (Youth) newspaper reported. — VNS
