Vietnam grandmaster Le Quang Liem has earned a draw with Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine at the ongoing Hainan Danzhou Super Grandmaster Chess Tournament in China.
Ukraine grandmaster Ruslan Ponomariov won the FIDE World Champion in 2002-2004.
Quang Liem had the advantage of holding the white pawn at the match with Ruslan Ponomariov at Danzhou Super Grandmaster Chess Tournament.
The match took place three and a half hours late as Ponomariov had an unexpected health problem. After 40 moves, both players claimed a draw.
In the afternoon of July 10, Quang Liem will compete with Ding Liren (Elo rating of 2.783) of China.
Quang Liem met Ponomariov (Elo rating of 2.712) in the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting in 2010. Ponomariov won the championship in the tournament.
