According to the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Centre, the latest earthquake measuring 2.7 on the Richter Scale happened on Thursday morning near the Song Tranh Hydropower Plant 2 reservoir in Bac Tra My District.

Earlier, on September 21, two earthquakes measuring 2.6 and 2.8 on the Richter Scale occurred in Bac Tra My and Nam Tra My District for two consecutive hours.

Over the past few years, Quang Nam Province has experienced several earthquakes which seismologists believe were triggered by hydropower reservoirs. Between early 2017 and August this year, up to 75 earthquakes of 2.5-3.9 Richter Scale were recorded in Bac Tra My District.

The centre director Nguyen Hong Phuong attributed the earthquakes to the rule of earthquake excitation by the water storage of the hydropower plant reservoir.

It is water storage of the reservoir at a specific level will trigger a sequence of earthquakes and tremors. This sequence will come to an end when the strongest earthquake strikes, which as a rule never exceeds the reservoir's design limit.

The largest quake has been recorded so far measured 4.7 on the Richter Scale in 2012.
