Sandbags used to reinforce the dyke

Quang Nam Vice Chairman Huynh Khanh Toan signed the decision about building a 300m dyke. It would run from Victoria Hotel to the northwest beaches of Hoi An Town to prevent erosion.

Quang Nam Province has been in a struggle to save Cua Dai Beach. The prime minister agreed to give Hoi An Town VND40bn (USD1.60m) for the anti-erosion project in 2016. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was asked to work with related agencies and experts to find a final solution to the problem.

Quang Nam authorities also approved a dyke project with the authorities of Hoi An Town as the investor in phase two with the total cost of VND80bn (USD3.20m).

The authorities are repairing a 714m rock dyke from the Sunrise Hotel to Fusionalya Hotel which was built in 2012. Since early 2018, about 70 metres at various sections of the dyke has been severely damaged. Some sections are only reinforced with sandbags. The authorities in Hoi An Town have proposed to spend VND27bn (USD1.08m) to repair the dyke in two phases.

Last year, a 20m section of Cua Dai Beach was successfully restored after three years being damaged by erosion.

There has been severe erosion in Hoi An with 20 hectares of Cua Dai beach having been washed away. A 300m section of the beach was eroded by late 2015.
