Police in Mong Cai City, Quang Ninh Province have arrested two women for children trafficking on February 19.

On February 16, the police noticed two suspicious motorbike taxis carrying two women and babies on Hung Vuong Street. When pulled over the drivers suddenly ran away.

The women are sisters, Nguyen Thi Bich Yen and Nguyen Thi Bich Phuong. At the time they were carrying a boy and a girl that were only over a month old. Yen said she had married a Chinese man since 2013 and recently suggested returning to Vietnam to find a baby boy to sell to her brother-in-law’s family.

Yen illegally entered Vietnam last November to search for a pregnant woman who wanted to sell her baby. On February 3, Yen went to HCM City after hearing that a mother in Hung Vuong Hospital was in difficulties and couldn't afford to raise her new-born. Yen agreed to pay VND35m (USD1,500) for the girl.

A week later, an anonymous woman called Yen, saying that she wanted to sell her son for VND35m. Yen was given a baby boy and the paperwork at Long Khanh Bus Station in Dong Nai Province.

Yen and her sister were on the way to deliver the children to China when they were caught.

The children have been transferred to care homes.
