The Quang Ninh Provincial People’s Committee has proposed Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung consider and approve a plan for turning Quang Ninh Airport into the Van Don International Airport.
The target of the plan is to attract international investors into the Van Don Economic Zone, which will become a special administrative-economic area, according to the People’s Committee.
The project must proceed quickly to meet needs. If the revised plan for the development of air transport in the period to 2020 is improved, the People’s Committee wants the government to consider and approve this plan.
The Ministry of Transport would then update documents for adjusting the transport development plan for air transport to 2020 and orientation to 2030.
Quang Ninh Airport was built in Doan Ket commune in Van Don district.
According to a plan approved by the Ministry of Transport in 2012, the airport is at the 4E level under the standard code of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and a military airport Class II, which can function as a domestic airport able to serve international flights.
By 2020, the project will build a passenger terminal with a capacity of catering to 2 million passengers annually.
By 2030, the project will expand the passenger terminal to a capacity of 5 million passengers per year, if required.
The project has been implemented by the People’s Committee under the build-operate-transfer BOT form developed by the Van Don Investment Development Joint Stock Company - Sungroup Group, with total investment capital of nearly VND7.5 trillion ($329.5 million), of which the construction cost is VND2.1 trillion ($93.3 million).
