A calf embezzled by state officials

Locals in Trieu Do Commune were given 10 calves based on farmer support policies for the 2016-2020 period.

Each calf costs VND18m (USD790), of which VND4m must be paid by farmers.

However, after being given the calves, the authorities of Trieu Do Commune allocated the calves to state officials and their families instead of low-income farmers. According to the locals, many calves have been sold for meat.

Ho Van Dan in Gia Do Village said, "I registered to receive the calves last year but was refused. Then I saw the calves sold to the slaughterhouse at the price of VND10m each. Out of all of the people who were given the calves, only two of them are not state officials."

Nguyen Xuan Truong, head of Trieu Do Commune, admitted that they had received 10 calves last year and had allocated them to officials and their relatives. Because the calves were transferred to them during the busiest time at the end of the year, the communal vice chairman only told the heads of the villages to inform the people.

"The village heads claimed that no one wanted the calves. Since the calves must be given to farmers, we gave them to families with farms," he said.

However, Head of Gia Do Village, Tran Phuoc Duc, said he had never heard about the allocated calves.

At least half of the calves have been killed.
