Nguyen Quynh Anh was crowned Miss Universe Vietnam 2026, while the final night's Top 5 and Top 3 question rounds drew criticism for safe answers that produced few memorable moments.
From first runner-up to the crown
The Miss Universe Vietnam 2026 final took place in Hai Phong on the evening of Oct. 2.
This year's competition was unusually short, beginning on Sept. 24 and taking place entirely in the coastal city. Judges selected a Top 30 for the final, although two contestants withdrew for personal reasons before the final night.
The last name called was Nguyen Quynh Anh from Hanoi.
The 27-year-old, who stands 1.75 meters tall, was runner-up at The Face Vietnam 2018 before winning Supermodel Me 2021 and finishing as first runner-up at Miss Universe Vietnam 2024.
Quynh Anh burst into tears as she received the crown from reigning queen Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen.

She will represent Vietnam at the 75th Miss Universe pageant, to be held in Puerto Rico in November.
Trinh My Anh, 23, who won the Miss Earth Water title at Miss Earth 2025, was named first runner-up.
Emma Le, 26, from Ho Chi Minh City, finished as second runner-up.
Rapper Phao, whose real name is Nguyen Dieu Huyen, and Trinh Thi Hong Dang were named third and fourth runners-up, respectively.
Phao also won the Most Popular Beauty and Best Evening Gown awards.
Top 5: Similar questions, similar answers
In the Top 5 round, each contestant selected one of five numbered, anonymous suitcases containing a question.
Hong Dang drew laughter when she chose suitcase No. 7, even though the host had announced that there were only five suitcases numbered one through five.
All five questions centered on women in modern society, leaving limited room for the contestants to distinguish themselves.
Phao was asked about the greatest pressure facing women today. She said women often find themselves torn between pursuing what they want and trying to please those around them.
My Anh received a question about how women's success should be measured, while Hong Dang was asked how women can maintain confidence and self-worth when social media constantly encourages comparison.
Emma Le answered in both English and Vietnamese when asked what she would want audiences to remember about her if she did not win the crown.
Quynh Anh was asked whether she would speak up to defend a position she believed was right, even at the cost of losing people's affection, or remain silent to preserve a positive image.
She chose to speak up, but said she would do so respectfully and politely, stressing that people need to assess right and wrong according to each situation.
She said she would defend what she believed was right and was "not afraid of losing my image."
Her answer received an enthusiastic response in the auditorium.
Overall, however, all five contestants returned to similar themes of confidence, authenticity and listening to oneself.
None offered a specific personal experience, an unconventional perspective or a particularly sharp detail likely to remain with the audience.
Even the question about choosing between speaking out and remaining silent offered room for debate, but choosing to speak up was a relatively safe response that many viewers could have anticipated.
Hong Dang's fourth runner-up finish was perhaps the biggest disappointment.
A graduate in Risk Management and Economics from Pennsylvania State University in the United States, she had ranked highly in many pre-final predictions because of her communication skills.
Yet the question about social media comparison, a topic closely related to her own experience, did not become the standout moment many had expected.

Quynh Anh, My Anh and Emma Le advanced to the Top 3 and received the same question: If they had only one year of their reign to create meaningful change for Vietnamese women, what issue would they choose and where would they begin?
My Anh introduced her project Them mot lan nua (One More Time), aimed at encouraging women to regain confidence after setbacks.
Emma Le said she wanted to inspire charitable organizations to support women and children in areas including knowledge, health, mental well-being and economic circumstances, while emphasizing collective rather than individual action.
Quynh Anh answered bilingually, saying she wanted to use her voice to help disadvantaged women and children gain the confidence to express themselves. More specifically, she proposed organizing catwalk classes where she could listen to their stories.
The question contained two clear elements, with "where would you begin?" calling for a concrete plan.
Yet all three answers remained focused on broad groups such as disadvantaged women and children in difficult circumstances, without identifying locations, partners or measurable targets to be achieved within 12 months.
Quynh Anh's proposal had the advantage of drawing on her professional modeling background, making it consistent with her personal image. However, the way she presented the idea was considered too narrow, leaving some viewers unclear about the project's broader scope.
Following the final, social media reaction split into two camps.
Some viewers considered Quynh Anh a deserving winner because of her height, runway skills, Asian features and determination to compete again despite already holding a title.
Others argued that My Anh or Emma Le would have been more suitable winners and said the new queen's question-and-answer performance was not particularly strong. Several pre-final prediction lists had also favored the two contestants.
A quiet conclusion to the competition
The question-and-answer segment has traditionally produced some of the most memorable moments at Miss Universe Vietnam.
In 2024, Ky Duyen was not considered the strongest contender after the Top 5 round, but her Top 3 answer helped turn the competition around and was praised as the best response of the night.
In 2023, by contrast, Bui Quynh Hoa's Top 3 answer sparked controversy over claims that it closely resembled material circulating online.
The 2026 competition avoided the controversy of 2023, but it also failed to produce a defining moment comparable to 2024.
One possible factor was the compressed preparation period, with the competition lasting only about a week following a series of disputes over copyright and the right to send a Vietnamese representative to the international pageant.
Another was the nature of the questions, which made it easy for contestants to fall back on formulaic responses.
Quynh Anh's victory therefore rested largely on her runway performance, physique and pageant experience.
Before she reaches the international stage, where answering questions in English can play a decisive role in the final ranking, this remains an area for the new Miss Universe Vietnam to improve, as her expression, delivery and pronunciation are still relatively limited.
