From the highest-ever scorer in Vietnam National University-HCM’s competency assessment to an International Mathematical Olympiad medalist and familiar faces from a popular televised academic competition, an accomplished group of freshmen is arriving at the University of Science in Ho Chi Minh City for the 2026 academic year.

The University of Science under Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City is welcoming a 2026 freshman class that includes students with standout achievements in national examinations, academic competitions and international intellectual contests.

Among the most prominent is Tran Tien Dat, who topped Vietnam National University-HCM’s 2026 competency assessment with 1,139 out of 1,200 points in the second testing round - the highest score recorded in the exam’s history. He has been admitted to the university’s Advanced Program in Computer Science.

Another notable freshman is Tran Dai Thanh Danh, who won a silver medal at the 2026 International Mathematical Olympiad, a gold medal at the 2026 Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad and first prize in Vietnam’s national mathematics competition for outstanding high school students for two consecutive years.

Thanh Danh received direct admission and will study at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science.

The incoming class also includes two familiar faces from Road to Mount Olympia, Vietnam’s long-running televised academic competition for high school students.

Doan Thanh Tung, runner-up in the 2025 competition, is joining the English-enhanced Biotechnology program. Nguyen Nhut Lam, who finished third in Road to Mount Olympia 2025, will study Chemistry under the English-enhanced program.

Below are some of the University of Science’s standout freshmen for 2026:

Võ Đăng Tuệ

Vo Dang Tue, a former student of Chi Lang High School in Gia Lai, was the province’s top scorer in the 2026 high school graduation examination and its highest-scoring candidate in the A00 subject combination. Tue has also earned a series of distinctions in technology, innovation and artificial intelligence, including a consolation prize in an international drone programming competition in South Korea; gold and silver medals at the World Invention Creativity Olympic (WICO); a gold medal and runner-up title at the Youth Tech Asia Challenge 2025; the Amaze Award at the IDE Series in Singapore; and third prize at Vietnam’s 2025 National Artificial Intelligence Olympiad. He is now a freshman in the Advanced Program in Computer Science.

Huynh Ngoc Nhan, a former student of Le Quy Don High School for the Gifted in Da Nang, was the city’s top scorer in the X26 subject combination in the 2026 high school graduation examination. He previously won first prize at the 2024 National High School ICPC competition. Ngoc Nhan is now a freshman in the Advanced Program in Computer Science.

Huynh Nghia Nhan, a former student of Thoai Ngoc Hau High School for the Gifted in An Giang, topped the province’s 2026 high school graduation examination in the A00 subject combination. In 2025, he won second prize in the provincial mathematics competition for outstanding students. Nghia Nhan is now a freshman in the Advanced Program in Computer Science.
