Residents in several apartment buildings in Ho Chi Minh City are complaining about the ban on keeping pets at their apartments.

The Ehome3 Apartment Building in Binh Tan District announced on December 26 that all dogs and cats must be taken out of the building before January 1, 2018, which has outraged many people living here.

A resident, Pham Thi Phuong, complained that that was a ridiculous ban. "There's no reason to ban us from keeping pets at our home if this doesn't affect anyone or the environment," Phuong said. "The announcement came out of the blue so we don't have enough time to prepare for this."

Another resident, Nguyen Van Truong also insisted that he won't take his dog and cat out of his home.

"We keep them indoors most of the time and they don't disturb anyone," Truong said.

According to a representative from the Ehome 3's management board, Vo Dy, residents aren’t carefully monitoring their pets when they let them out.

"This is threatening others and polluting the environment so we have to issue the ban," Dy claimed.

The same issue has caused uproar at the Hoang Anh Thanh Binh Apartment Building in District 7 for the last three months.

However, it seems impossible to carry out the ban due to a lack of legal basis.

Chairman of the Ward 2 People's Committee in District 5, Huynh Dac Nha, said that the Ministry of Construction's circular only bans the raising of livestock and poultry at apartment buildings. But this would not apply to pets as they are neither livestock nor poultry.
