According to Nha Trang Bay Management Board, the accident occurred at around 12pm on Wednesday when Vladislav Sharolov, 33, and his three friends came to swim at Hon Chong Beach. They swam and were taken as far as 100 metres from the shore by strong waves to swirling currents.

"We've sent rescue team soon but could only save three of them while Vladislav Sharolov went missing in the currents and was later found dead, the board said.

Nha Trang Beach was full of driftwood after heavy rains over the past few days but many tourists, mostly foreign people, still came for swimming on December 27.

Head of Nha Trang Bay Management Board, Huynh Binh Thai, said that there have been strong waves in local sea over the last days.

"We have posted warning signboards and announced the danger to tourists but some still swam far from the shore," he said.
