The impact of typhoon Yagi has left many roads flooded and blocked, with landslides further complicating travel and causing disruptions.
One of the business owners stepping up to help is Tran Lan, who runs the Binh Lan Hotel (22B Thac Bac Street, Phan Xi Pang Ward, Sa Pa). "On September 8th, after learning about the landslides and flooding, I wanted to contribute in any way I could to ensure that people stranded here had a safe place to stay," she shared.
Since posting her offer on social media, five people, including both residents and tourists, have reached out to her for help. Her hotel currently has 12 vacant rooms, accommodating up to 40 people. "We are ready to provide free accommodation and meals to anyone stranded, whether they are locals or tourists," she added.
Similarly, Thinh, the owner of Lito Hotel (Le Van Tam Street), is offering free lodging for those affected by the floods. He has already provided shelter to a family from Nha Trang, two tourists from Thai Nguyen, and two drivers from Hai Duong who were trapped in Sa Pa due to landslides blocking major routes.
"I hope that this small gesture will help relieve some of the stress that the stranded visitors are feeling. We all want things to return to normal as soon as possible," Thinh said.
Nguyen Manh Cuong, the manager of Anh Tu Hotel on Thac Bac Street, has also opened his doors to those in need. His hotel still has 24 rooms available for free accommodation. "We are doing everything we can to help the people and tourists stuck here," he stated.
As the landslides have severely impacted Sa Pa, an estimated 15-20 businesses, ranging from small inns to larger hotels, have joined in offering free accommodation to ensure the safety of those stranded. The owners of these establishments are focused on helping as many people as possible, setting aside concerns about revenue during this challenging time.
In addition to free lodging, many local restaurants in Sa Pa are offering complimentary meals to both tourists and locals who have been affected. Several tour companies have also refunded deposits to customers who had planned visits to Sa Pa but can no longer travel due to the weather conditions.
Lan Anh, the owner of Pho Co Sa Pa Hotel and Restaurant (Cau May Street), is providing free meals, accommodations, and amenities such as washing machines and dryers for guests. "We are offering what we have to make sure everyone stays safe and comfortable until the weather improves," she said.
Duong Truc Long, owner of Sapa Luxury Hotel & Spa, has also opened his hotel to stranded guests. With 72 rooms capable of hosting up to 300 people, Long is not only providing shelter but also offering food for guests to prepare their own meals. "We want to make sure everyone has a safe place to stay until the flooding subsides," Long said.
On September 8th, the Sa Pa People's Committee issued a directive halting all outdoor tourism activities and closing tourist sites until further notice. Roads and infrastructure have been severely damaged by the storm, and local authorities are working around the clock to minimize the damage and ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
In response to the ongoing situation, the Lao Cai Provincial Tourism Department has urged tourism businesses to keep customers informed and provide necessary assistance to those affected by the floods and landslides.
