In June 2018, the Hoai Duc district People's Court in Hanoi sentenced Nguyen Dinh Le, born in 1974, to six years in prison for sexual assault of a person under aged 16 during the period from November 2017 to April 2018.

Le was a teacher at An Thuong A Primary School. His victims were seven female students.

In classes, Le asked his students to help pull out his grey hair or told them to sit on the teacher’s chair so that he could sexually assault the girls.

When students came to his house to attend extra classes, he gave gifts to them and led them to his bedroom to commit sexual assault. 

The number of victims in reality was higher than seven, as Le admitted. However, the students and their families refused to report the cases. 

A number of sexual harassment cases in schools in recent months have stunned the public. 

In December 2018, Dinh Bang My, 59, headmaster of the Thanh Son Ethnic Minority Boarding Secondary School, was arrested and prosecuted for sexually abusing male students at the school.

Local newspapers reported that the man summoned students to his office to commit sexual abuse, for which he gave VND20,000-30,000 and sweets to students as awards.

Lawyer Diep Nang Binh from Tinh Thong Luat Law Office said if My is subjected to criminal prosecution, he could face imprisonment of up to three years.

However, according to Binh, one student has accused My of conducting oral sex with him and if the accusation is proven, the highest punishment could be 15 years in prison.

In November 2018, the Quang Nam provincial People’s Court sentenced Nguyen Quang Chung, born in 1969, former teacher of Zo Nong Primary School, who raped children, to 24 years in jail.

From early 2015 academic year to April 2016, Chung, as a morality teacher, called students to his office many times during the break time or after school hours to commit violations.

In June 2018, following denouncement by a parent, T.C.D, a primary school teacher in Hoc Mon district, HCM City was discovered regularly conducting sexual abuse with 12 female students during IT and physical education lessons.

D, a fourth-grade female student, said the teacher regularly touched her breasts, buttocks and genital areas and did the same with many other students. 

The police detained the teacher for investigation. On June 16, 2018, the Hoc Mon district people’s procuracy ratified the detention decision.
