According to the HCMC Education & Training Department, the city will have 1.677 million students in the 2018-2019 academic year, or 67,000 students higher than in the previous year. The sharpest increase is seen in preschool education (20,225) and primary education (26,812).

Binh Tan district in HCMC this year has to admit 4,000 students more than the previous year. It is expected that 14,160 students will go to the first grade. As for secondary education, only 5,400 students have finished the ninth grade, while 8,400 students are about to enter secondary schools.

According to Ngo Van Tuyen, head of the Binh Tan district education sub-department, no new school has been built. Only 11 classrooms at primary schools and five classrooms at secondary schools have been set up.

As the number of students is increasing sharply, many schools in HCMC are refusing to accept day-boarding students. And in Hanoi, the number of students in many classes is double what is permitted.

In Binh Tri Dong B Ward, the number of students finishing primary education is high every year. As there is no secondary school in the locality, the students have to go to schools in other wards.

Binh Tri 2 is the only primary school in Binh Tri Dong B. As it can admit no more than 400 students, the other 400 first graders will have to go to Binh Tan and An Lac 3 schools.

Tuyen said in order to arrange enough seats for students, local schools have no other choice than to cut the number of students who go to school both in the morning and afternoon, raising the number of students in each class, and eliminating day-boarding classes.

The schools in the districts of Go Vap, Thu Duc, Tan Phu and 12 have also cut the number of day-boarding classes.

In Tan Phu district, according to Tran Trong Khiem, deputy head of the district’s education sub-department, only four schools can receive students in both the morning and afternoon.

Parents have complained about the removal of day-boarding classes. They now have to spend a short lunchtime to fetch children and then return to the office.

In Hanoi, the city expects to receive 130,000 first graders in the 2018-2019 academic year, or 30,000 higher than the previous year.

Under current regulations, there must not be more than 35 students in each class. However, deputy director of the Hanoi Education & Training Department Pham Xuan Tien said there are many 60-student classes in schools in Hoang Mai, Cau Giay and Thanh Xuan.

The situation is especially serious in Thanh Xuan district. Three students have to share the same table, designed for two.
