He said humankind is in the early stage of the AI revolution. Coding is no longer an important skill because AI now can undertake the work of coding well. So, people should focus on work which can bring higher value, such as production or agriculture.

Instead of learning to code, Nvidia’s CEO advised young people to study computer science and equip themselves with other skills to become specialists in a more useful field.

The statement of the CEO raised a controversy. Nguyen Huu Cam, a lecturer of IT at a university in Hanoi, said children still should learn coding.

Cam said AI can only undertake some kinds of work, while specific things still need to be done by people. The content generated by AI can still be subjective and biased, especially political and religious content. Therefore, AI needs standards and good input and more practice. This needs people’s supervision.

He believes that it will still take more time for AI to be able to replace humans in programming. However, when this moment comes, other new fields that need coding will be generated.

Cam, as an educator, said that IT graduates can still easily find jobs, though he noted that in the current difficult conditions, when businesses have had to lay off personnel, the IT worker market is getting more competitive.

“It is not easy for new graduates to find good jobs with high pay, because employers have set higher requirements. New graduates need to have the same professional knowledge as junior workers,” he said.

“Good foreign language skills will be privileged,” he said.

Dang Minh Tuan, head of the CMC Technology Research and Application, said the question ‘should children learn coding’ is just like the question ‘why learn mathematics?’.

“Why do people still need to learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide if computers and mobile phones exist everywhere? Why do people still need to learn other languages, though interpreting tools are ready for use?” he said.

“Learning coding is to understand the way of implementing logical questions and understanding the language of computers. This is also a skill for people to take the initiative in solving simple work,” Tuan said.

Learning to code is not mandatory, but if they have coding skills, young people will have certain advantages.
