The Directorate for Roads of Viet Nam (DRV) has proposed installing 300 Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lights running on solar energy along some national highways and expressways from 2016 to 2018.

These solar-powered LED lights will replace the 240 existing electric lights, and more than 2,700 traffic safety tools running on solar energy will be used on national highways and expressways, which are 9km long in total.

The project's total investment is nearly VND50 billion (some US$2.2 million) and is funded by the State's budget.

The DRV claims it manages some 21,278km of the national highways and 102km of the expressways. Currently, lighting systems on these roads utilise electricity and incandescent light bulbs. Therefore, monthly electricity fees for lighting are high.

The project is expected to help address some issues, including saving on electricity consumption and other expenditures, avoiding dependence on electricity and matching the lighting system to suit different areas, especially on roads far away from residential areas.
