After months of leaks and rumors, Sony has finally confirmed the launch timing for its next flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VIII.

The device is widely seen as Sony’s most important smartphone release of 2026 and another attempt by the Japanese company to maintain relevance in the ultra-premium segment currently dominated by Apple, Samsung and major Chinese brands.

Although Sony has yet to officially reveal the full specifications, nearly every major detail surrounding the device has already surfaced ahead of launch, including its design, hardware and potentially eye-watering price tag.

Xperia 1 VIII set for May 13 launch

Sony has officially announced a new Xperia event scheduled for May 13.

While the company stopped short of directly naming the smartphone set to appear, the promotional tagline posted on Instagram - “When excellence becomes complete, the next generation is coming” - strongly suggests the Xperia 1 VIII will take center stage.

The launch event will be livestreamed on YouTube at 11 a.m. Japan time, equivalent to around 9 a.m. in Vietnam.

Alongside the smartphone, Sony is also rumored to unveil a new camera body and lens, reinforcing the company’s strategy of tightly integrating its Xperia lineup with the well-known Alpha camera ecosystem.

Major design overhaul may finally arrive

The most noticeable change on the Xperia 1 VIII could be its redesigned appearance.

Previously leaked renders suggest Sony may abandon the familiar vertical camera layout used across multiple Xperia generations in favor of a larger square-shaped camera module.

If accurate, the move would mark one of the most significant design shifts in Xperia history.

Sony has long been associated with a minimalist, boxy and relatively conservative design philosophy, so altering the camera layout may signal the company’s desire to modernize its flagship lineup and improve competitiveness.

According to leaks, the Xperia 1 VIII may also become slightly wider and thicker than the Xperia 1 VII.

Even so, Sony is expected to retain several signature features that have become hallmarks of the Xperia flagship series.

Most notably, the phone will likely keep visible top and bottom bezels instead of adopting punch-hole cameras or under-display selfie cameras like many rivals.

That choice allows Sony to preserve front-facing stereo speakers, a feature highly valued by multimedia enthusiasts.

In addition, the 3.5mm headphone jack is also rumored to remain.

At a time when nearly every premium smartphone has abandoned the traditional audio port, Sony continues to target users who prioritize high-quality wired audio experiences.

Upgraded cameras and possible two-day battery life

In terms of hardware, the Xperia 1 VIII is expected to run Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, the latest premium processor for Android flagships.

That upgrade itself is hardly surprising.

The more exciting developments appear to involve the camera system.

Sony is rumored to be making substantial improvements to the phone’s photography capabilities, particularly in the telephoto camera.

A completely new sensor may reportedly be introduced to improve optical zoom quality, an area where Sony has traditionally performed strongly.

Leaks also point to a 16mm ultra-wide camera alongside a standard 24mm wide-angle lens.

Sony is expected to continue emphasizing a professional photography experience by leveraging expertise from its Alpha camera division and Exmor sensor technologies.

Another detail attracting attention is the possibility of “two-day” battery life.

If true, the Xperia 1 VIII could become one of the longest-lasting Android flagships on the market, especially when combined with Sony’s reputation for software optimization.

Price may become the biggest obstacle

The most controversial aspect of the Xperia 1 VIII, however, may ultimately be its price.

Current rumors suggest the flagship could launch in Europe for as much as 1,868.99 euros, equivalent to roughly USD 2,200.

That would place the Xperia 1 VIII among the most expensive smartphones currently available, even surpassing several ultra-premium competitors.

If accurate, the pricing would continue Sony’s long-standing strategy of positioning Xperia devices at the very top end of the market.

According to leaks, shipments may begin on June 26.

However, Sony is reportedly unlikely to officially release the device in the United States.

Based on everything revealed so far, the Xperia 1 VIII appears to continue Sony’s strategy of building premium smartphones aimed at photography enthusiasts, audiophiles and dedicated tech users rather than the mass market.

Still, the extremely high price may become the device’s biggest challenge.

At a time when global smartphone prices continue rising, asking consumers to spend more than USD 2,000 on a smartphone could prove difficult, especially with so many powerful flagship alternatives available at lower prices.

Sony may still know how to build unique and highly distinctive smartphones, but turning the Xperia 1 VIII into a commercial success could remain an uphill battle in 2026.
