Vietnam secured a resounding 5-0 victory over Myanmar at Viet Tri Stadium (Phu Tho) on December 21, earning a place in the semifinals of the ASEAN Cup 2024 (AFF Cup).

The match marked a milestone for 27-year-old forward Nguyen Xuan Son, who made his debut in the tournament with an outstanding performance: scoring two goals and assisting two more.

The Straits Times, Singapore's prominent newspaper, highlighted Xuan Son’s contributions: "Nguyen Xuan Son was the star of the match, scoring twice and providing two assists in his first international game. After a goalless first half, Xuan Son set up Bui Vi Hao for the opening goal in the 48th minute.

Minutes later, roles reversed as Vi Hao assisted Xuan Son’s first goal for Vietnam.

Nguyen Quang Hai added a third, followed by Xuan Son’s second goal - a skillful dribble past two defenders and a left-footed strike.

Nguyen Tien Linh sealed the 5-0 victory.

The Straits Times also cautioned Singapore’s national team about the danger Xuan Son poses ahead of their semifinal match, emphasizing his game-changing ability.

Despite their disappointment over Indonesia’s elimination, local media extensively covered Xuan Son's brilliance, with his image dominating headlines.

In Thailand, Siam Sport remarked: "Xuan Son’s double debut performance led Vietnam to a 5-0 victory over Myanmar, setting up a semifinal clash with Singapore."

Thai newspaper Thai Rath succinctly praised him: "Xuan Son excelled with two goals in his first match, helping Vietnam crush Myanmar and advance to the semifinals."

Vietnam will face Singapore in the first semifinal, with the first leg set to take place at Jalan Besar Stadium on December 26 at 8 PM.
