Locals make Eiffel Tower for Christmas
Christians in Vinh City of central province of Nghệ An have erected an Eiffel Tower model made of bamboo as part of celebrations for Christmas and the upcoming Tết (Lunar New Year). Nguyễn Văn Nam, chief of Hamlet 5 of Nghi Phú Commune, said people in the hamlet took turns to erect the bamboo “Eiffel Tower” from December 4 to 18 to finish it before the Noel celebration. There were some 20 people working on it each day. This structure, which cost some VNĐ60 million (US$2,600), is 34m tall and 10m wide. More than 300 bamboo trees, 100kg of steel and 20kg of iron nails were used. The tower was painted white and decorated with electric lights. Nam said in 2007, the villagers also made a Christmas tower that was 17m tall, and was bought by a hotel in Vinh City for VNĐ7 million ($300). |
