The storm also destroyed around 3,550 houses, breached dykes, left transport projects in ruins, and caused flood damage to houses, fruit trees, crops and subsidiary crops. Total damage is estimated at VND22,700 billion.

The details were announced at a meeting in Hanoi on December 14, which was co-chaired by the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and head of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control Nguyen Xuan Cuong and UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Kamal Malhotra.

The meeting aims to call on organizations and individuals to join hands in supporting localities dealing with the consequences of the storm, helping them to swiftly restore production and stabilize their lives.

From early in the year, Vietnam has been confronted with the destruction from a series of 14 storms, many floods, and landslides, leaving 386 dead and missing with total damage running to VND60,000 billion (US$2.6 billion).

At the meeting, Mr Cuong thanked domestic and foreign organizations and individuals for recent donations of money and other essentials to people of central regions and expressed hope to receive further support in reconstruction efforts after the storm.

For his part, Mr Malhotra pledged to work with Vietnam on assisting natural disaster victims in stabilizing their lives.
