VietNamNet Bridge - Nguyen Nga Nhi came first at the 2016 high-school entrance exam in Hanoi. She also earned top scores at the entrance exams to the three most prestigious high schools for the gifted in the capital city.

She received 10 for math and 8.5 for literature at the high-school entrance exam. She came first at the entrance exam to the math and physics majoring classes of the High School for the Gifted, belonging to the Hanoi Natural Sciences University. She also came first at the entrance exam to the math majoring class of the High School for the Gifted under the Hanoi University of Education.

Nhi became familiar with four basic operations when she was four years old. Also in the same year, Nhi began learning to play piano. Just one year later, Nhi won the second prize at the Hanoi’s Piano Festival, though she was the youngest contestant. Later, when she turned, she received first prize at the same competition.

Nhi spent four years on secondary education at the Hanoi-Amsterdam School for the Gifted, one of the most wanted schools in Hanoi, during which she spent a lot of prizes at national and international competitions.

She was among the top 4 at 2013 APMOPS – the math competition in Asia Pacific; won the gold medal at the KIMC 2014, a math competition held in South Korea; won the silver medal at 2015 CIMC, a math competition in China; won the first prize at HOMC 2015, the Hanoi open math competition and some other prizes.

Nhi said she has been influenced by her father in music and math. She doesn’t understand why she has special passion for numbers. She feels excited when she can solve difficult math questions.

“Math helps people practice their logical thinking, therefore, it plays a very important role in your life,” she said, adding that it sometimes takes her several days to solve one math question, but she will not give up until she can find solutions.

When asked about her dreams, Nhi said she has many. She wants to become teachers like her grandfather. She also thought she may become a painter. And most recently she dreams of becoming a film director. The girl just attended a training course on making films and produced a short film.

Nhi is a member of the famous Nguyen Lan family. Her grandfather is Dr Nguyen Lan Hung, a biotechnology lecturer at the Hanoi University of Education. Hung is the fifth son of Nguyen Lan, whose seven sons and one daughter have doctorates and have gained achievements in scientific research.
