Trang scored 29.25 points in Biology, winning first prize and recording the highest score nationwide.
Trang told VietNamNet that she is very happy that her efforts had been rewarded.
With both parents working as doctors, Thuy Trang and her brother are oriented toward and share a love for Biology. Since Grade 8, when learning about human physiology, Trang began to feel curious and fascinated. The more she studied, the more engaging the subject became, prompting her to choose Biology as her specialized field.
Trang’s older brother, Vo Trung Hieu (four years her senior and currently a fourth-year student at Hanoi Medical University), is also a former Biology major student at Hanoi National University of Education High School for the Gifted and previously won first prize in the national excellent student exam. Hearing her brother talk about the school’s friendly environment and dedicated, highly qualified teachers, Trang nurtured a desire from a young age to study there.
Trang mentioned that the biggest challenge in studying Biology is the vast knowledge across 7 sub-disciplines. The hardest point is having to both memorize a lot of information and use logical thinking to solve biological problems.
For a subject that is both academic and highly applicable, Trang said her method is to focus on listening to lectures and taking notes on key points in class. At home, she often prepares document files on her computer to systemize and save knowledge, which helps with better memorization. Whenever she encounters unclear points, she proactively asks teachers and senior students.
“I also regularly refer to materials recommended by teachers, including Campbell Biology and specialized high school Biology materials, to broaden and deepen my knowledge,” Trang shared.
She also makes use of technology, especially AI tools, to search for materials and summarize key ideas, thereby optimizing her study time. “When I cannot immediately ask someone, I often use AI for support, then double-check with teachers and senior students to ensure accuracy,” Trang said.
In her free time, Trang plays the piano to relieve stress. She also arranges her study and rest time reasonably to avoid burnout, maintain focus, and absorb lessons effectively.
The female student said that to achieve good results in the national exam for two consecutive years, she was lucky to study in a team with talented, united members who always share and support each other. Additionally, she regularly received dedicated guidance and timely encouragement from the teachers training the team. She also feels lucky to have the constant companionship and support of her parents and seniors.
Nguyen Vinh Ha, the homeroom teacher of the 12th-grade Biology class and a member of the school's excellence team coaching staff, said Thuy Trang revealed her passion for Biology since entering 10th grade.
“With the First Prize she won in the national exam last year, she was already eligible for direct admission to medical and pharmaceutical universities as she wished. But because she is very passionate about Biology and wants to make the team for the International Biology Olympiad (IBO) in 2026, she remains diligent and hardworking," Ha said.
Ha remarked that Thuy Trang always demonstrates a serious and persistent learning attitude, especially in Biology. "Not only does she love the subject, but Trang also has outstanding learning capacity, clear logical thinking, and quick absorption. With a solid English foundation, she proactively reads and exploits many Biology materials, especially International Biology Olympiad exams from various years, as well as professional documents guided by teachers," Ha said.
According to Ha, it is this passion, proactivity, and serious study spirit that brought Thuy Trang remarkable results. In 10th grade, Trang won First Prize at the Vietnam Science and Engineering Fair (ViSEF) and made the team for the international competition in the US. In 11th and 12th grade, she consecutively won First Prize in the national selection for gifted students in Biology, notably securing the national valedictorian position this year.
Currently, Thuy Trang continues to focus on reviewing for exam and aims for a high score in the selection round for the 2026 International Biology Olympiad team. Further ahead, she wants to pursue her dream of a medical career at leading universities.
