Seven years ago, Ha Ngoc Chi from Lang Son received a heart transplant from a 37 year old donor. Today, that donated heart continues to beat strongly, helping her pursue her dreams as a student.

Not only has Chi regained her health, but she has also worked hard academically. Recently, she won second prize in a provincial chemistry competition for outstanding students.

The heart she received years ago did not just save her life - it also helped illuminate a brighter future for the determined young girl.

Since childhood, Chi had suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy. Her family faced many difficulties. Her father works as a factory worker while her mother takes on cleaning jobs to support the family.

Their hardship was even greater because Chi’s older brother also had the same disease and had passed away.

The burden of making a living combined with constant worries about illness often pushed the family to the brink.

Doctors explained that the only way to prolong Chi’s life was a heart transplant.

When her parents heard that their daughter had a chance to receive a new heart, they felt both joy and anxiety. There was hope, but also many concerns - especially about the cost of such a complicated operation.

The family tried to raise money from many sources and received help from kind donors. Yet another question remained: where would a suitable heart come from?

Then a miracle happened.

A 37 year old man suffered a serious traffic accident and was declared brain dead. In their moment of deepest grief, his family decided to donate his organs to save others.

Chi’s medical indicators at the time matched the donated heart.

On October 1, 2019, the heart transplant surgery was successfully performed at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi.

The donated heart began beating again inside the young girl’s chest, bringing with it life, hope and a new future.

Now, seven years later, that heart of compassion continues to beat steadily, helping Chi grow, study and continue pursuing the dreams of her youth.
