Some students who studied at Can Tho University have sent letters to the school managers, complaining that their graduation theses have been offered on many websites under the form of PDF files.

The school’s management board has admitted that many theses are on sale, apologized the students and asked for the Can Tho City Police’s help to investigate the case.

On education forums, students complain that this is not the first time theses have been sold, though it is the first time students have made official claims.

At most universities, graduation papers are stored at libraries and serve as reference documents for other students. Many students upload their theses on websites, allowing others to download the documents for free reference.

It is very easy to seek to buy theses on internet, from graduation papers to PhD theses. And they are very cheap, at just VND10,000-15,000. Some websites only request clients to pay VND10,000 to download 150 documents within 15 days.

Thuy Anh, a former student of the Industry University, said she found her graduation papers of three years ago on the internet. “The documents are in PDF file and they are sold for VND5,000-10,000,” she said.

“I don’t understand why they have the documents to sell while I have never uploaded the documents on the internet,” she said.

Thu Huong, former student at the Journalism and Propaganda Academy, said two years ago she conducted a thesis on comments on online newspapers, which was a new topic at that moment and took her a lot of time to complete.

“But now you can buy it for VND20,000,” she said. “I don’t know where they get the documents."

Vice rector of the Hanoi University of Technology Tran Van Top confirmed that many theses were being sold on the internet.

“I am not sure about the sources of theses. But I know many students have their documents copied at photocopy shops. I guess the owners of the shops get copies of the documents and then post them on the internet,” he said.

He also said schools need to take necessary measures to protect hard and soft copies of the theses and call on agencies to take action to help stop the problem.
