HCM City People's Committee has proposed a plan for the first phase of Metro Line 5 which will kick off in 2023.

The city will begin implementing Metro No. 2 line project extending from Suoi Tien in Thu Duc District to Tham Luong in District 2, following the recent handover of a land plot from the People’s Committee of Tan Binh District.

HCM City has proposed the Ministry of Planning and Investment the construction of a metro project which has a total investment of VND68 trillion ($2.95 billion).

HCM City’s Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien Metro Line 1 aims to start trial operations in June in order to meet the official start of services in 2021. 

Vietnam Register have provided a temporary safety certificate for 13 trains for the Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro project.

The HCMC authority is seeking approval from the municipal People’s Council to borrow a total of over US$1.3 billion from the on-lending fund of the central Government to construct the city’s second metro line.

The Hanoi government is also considering building a number of monorail lines to better exploit the entire urban railway system in the capital city.

In a report sent to the NA, the Government pointed out that the volatile exchange rate between the Vietnamese dong and the Japanese yen is one of the main reasons for cost overruns in HCMC’s Metro Line No.1 project.
