Vietnam’s automotive market is witnessing fierce competition across various segments, with some segments seeing over 20 models vying for dominance. Among them, B-SUV (subcompact SUV) and C-SUV (compact SUV) stand out as the most competitive segments.

B-SUV: The most crowded segment

The B-SUV segment is currently the most dynamic and crowded in Vietnam, with around 20 models on offer. Notable names include the Toyota Corolla Cross, Yaris Cross, Mitsubishi Xforce, Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, Mazda CX-3, Mazda CX-30, Honda HR-V, Nissan Kicks, Volkswagen T-Cross, Peugeot 2008, MG ZS, and Subaru Cross Trek.

In addition, several Chinese brands have recently entered the market, including Lynk & Co 06, Omoda C5, Haval Jolion, and Geely Coolray. Electric SUVs such as VinFast VF 6 and BYD Atto 3 have also joined the competition.

One of the segment’s top performers, the Mitsubishi Xforce, recorded impressive sales of 14,407 units in 2024 despite being launched just in March of that year. Meanwhile, the Toyota Yaris Cross followed closely with 11,174 units sold. VinFast VF 6 also reported strong sales, though the specific numbers were not disclosed.

B-SUVs attract consumers with their sporty, high-ground-clearance designs while maintaining a compact size suitable for Vietnam’s roads. Prices ranging from $25,000 to $31,000 (600–750 million VND) make these vehicles accessible to a wide range of buyers.

C-SUV: A balance of performance and space

The C-SUV segment is equally competitive, boasting around 20 models with prices typically between $31,000 and $42,000 (750 million to over 1 billion VND). These models offer a balance of power, comfort, and utility, making them popular with Vietnamese consumers.

Key models in the C-SUV segment include the Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Ford Territory, Mitsubishi Outlander, Peugeot 3008, Peugeot 408, Volkswagen Tiguan, Subaru Forester, Haval H6, Skoda Karoq, MG HS, MG RX5, and Baic Beijing X7.

The segment also features electric models like the VinFast VF 7 and VF e34, as well as newcomers from China, such as Jeacoo J7, Lynk & Co 01, and Lynk & Co 05.

Mazda CX-5 has consistently led the C-SUV segment with 14,781 units sold in 2024, followed by Ford Territory with over 8,000 units. Both Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson also performed well, each selling more than 6,600 units throughout the year.

Why B-SUVs and C-SUVs dominate the market

The popularity of B-SUVs lies in their sporty aesthetics, compact dimensions, and affordable prices, making them practical for both urban and rural environments. On the other hand, C-SUVs offer a more spacious cabin, superior performance, and greater comfort - ideal for families and long-distance travel.

Both segments continue to attract a wide range of customers, from first-time car buyers to those upgrading from smaller vehicles. As automakers continue to introduce new models and updates, competition in these two segments remains more intense than ever.
