The current number of taxis is much more than that of personal vehicles in Hanoi.

Mr. Dao Viet Long, from the Hanoi Department of Transportation, said Hanoi had created a scheme on the taxi business, which specifies a certain number of taxis to be licenced each year.

Based on the scheme, last year the number of licensed taxis in Hanoi is 20,000. The number will be 25,000 vehicles in 2020.

However, as the new forms of taxis have appeared in Vietnam (Uber and Grab), which do not need taxi logos, the number of cars with fewer than nine seats registered for transport services soared recently.

By the end of June 2016, more than 4,000 cars of this type registered for transport services in the form of contracts, but in fact they were used as taxis without logos.

The Hanoi Department of Transportation has recently limited the number of taxis. However, transport firms in Hanoi dodged the restriction by establishing branches in the neighboring areas to register their taxis there and then bring these taxis back to Hanoi.

According to preliminary statistics of the authorities, there are around 7,600 taxis registered in other provinces but they operate in Hanoi.
