On the evening of January 2, the Vietnamese national team secured a thrilling 2-1 victory over Thailand in the first leg of the 2024 ASEAN Cup (AFF Cup) final. The match took place at Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho Province.

This marks Vietnam’s first home win against Thailand in nearly 27 years, giving coach Kim Sang Sik's squad a significant advantage in the race for the Southeast Asian championship title.

After a scoreless first half, despite numerous attempts on goal, Vietnam broke through with two consecutive goals by Xuan Son. The second goal was a masterpiece, as the 27-year-old striker stole the ball from deep within his half, surged forward, and finished with precision.

Siam Sport, a leading Thai sports outlet, highlighted Vietnam’s dominance: "Thailand couldn’t keep up with the game and was defeated by Vietnam. Changes are needed in the second leg.”

The report emphasized Xuan Son’s pivotal role, stating: "Xuan Son was the game-changer. The Thai defense couldn’t contain him, allowing him to score twice."

Siam Sport also praised his second goal, describing it as a remarkable display of skill and determination.

"In the 73rd minute, Xuan Son dispossessed Chalermsak Aukkee in his own half, sprinted into the box, and doubled the score with a well-placed shot to the far corner."

Although Aukkee redeemed himself with a header in the 82nd minute to reduce the deficit, Siam Sport acknowledged that Thailand faces an uphill battle in the return leg at home on January 5.

Thai Rath, another prominent Thai daily, maintained hope for the reigning champions, stating: "The ASEAN championship remains undecided despite Vietnam’s 2-1 advantage. The War Elephants still have a chance to defend their title."

The paper added, "Xuan Son's brilliance led to Vietnam's victory, but with one match remaining, Thailand has the opportunity to turn the tide at home."

Khaosod offered a different perspective, attributing Thailand’s loss to Xuan Son’s status as a naturalized player of Brazilian origin.

"Despite a strong first-half performance, the War Elephants couldn’t overcome Xuan Son's power and precision. The final will be decided in the second leg."

Khaosod also noted the pressure Thailand faces, especially since the away goals rule does not apply: "Vietnam needs only a draw to claim the 2024 ASEAN Cup title."

With the return leg scheduled at 8 p.m. on January 5 in Thailand, the Vietnamese team is poised to make history. Thailand, meanwhile, must regroup and strategize to overturn the deficit.

For Vietnam, the brilliance of Xuan Son has brought them closer than ever to the championship. For Thailand, redemption awaits in their home fortress.
