VietNamNet Bridge - Thousands of wild birds of all species, including rare ones, are sold along a road over 1km long in Thanh Hoa district in the southern province of Long An.



A 1km long segment of National Highway 62 is called the bird market by locals. Located near the Vietnam-Cambodia border, this is the largest wild bird market in the south. The market not only lures local visitors but those from other provinces.






Stalls are built along the road, selling many species of wild birds, both live and dead.






Sellers are willing to slaughter birds on the spot.






Storks are priced VND50,000-VND70,000/bird.






Darters or snakebirds, which are very rare, are sold for VND300,000 ($13)/head.







Green pigeons and ruddy ground doves are the most available at the market, priced from VND50,000-VND70,000 per kilo.  





Grey-headed swamphen also appear at this market. The price for one pair is VND800,000 ($40) to VND1 million ($50).

Wild ducks are priced at VND300,000-VND450,000/kg.





There are 22 stalls in the market.

Long An Province People's Committee has asked Thanh Hoa District authorities to urge people to stop trading wild birds, but the market is still bustling. 

Le Huu Loi, vice chief ranger of Long An Province, said that authorities imposed fines on eight people who sold endangered birds this year.

Loi said many species of wild birds sold at the market were not on the list of endangered species banned from trade and hunting. Thus, rangers cannot punish traders for wildlife trading.
